The Run Within 3: The story I haven’t told yet

Some stories aren’t yours alone to tell.

So you carry them. Quietly. For years.

And without realising it, they shape everything. The goals you set. The distances you’re willing to go. The reason you keep moving when most people would stop.

I’ve had one of those stories my whole life.

It’s not about running. It goes much further back than that. And for a long time I couldn’t share it, not because I was hiding, but because it wasn’t mine alone to tell.

Recently, after one of the most important conversations of my life, I was given permission to share it openly for the first time.

I have a documentary coming later this year, or early next. When it releases, that story will finally be told in full. And I think when you watch it, a lot of things about why I do what I do will make sense that didn’t before.

I’ve been thinking a lot lately about the people who attempt things others consider impossible.

The ones who run further than seems reasonable. Who build something from nothing. Who keep going in circumstances that would make most people quietly walk away.

There’s almost always something underneath that drive that doesn’t make the highlight reel.

Not because they’re hiding it. But because some things take time before they’re ready to be shared. Some things need distance before they can be spoken clearly. And some things require permission from people who were part of the story too.

I’ve spent years letting that part of my life shape who I am without being able to name it openly. It shaped the goal I set at 20. It shaped the reason I kept going on the hard days. It shaped the person I was becoming long before anyone was watching.

The hardest parts of our lives are rarely separate from our greatest achievements. More often, they’re the reason for them.

The hardest parts of our lives are rarely separate from our greatest achievements. More often, they’re the reason for them.

I think about the people I’ve met through speaking and coaching. The ones quietly carrying something while building something. The athlete processing loss while chasing a title. The founder holding a family story while building a company. The person showing up every day for something bigger than themselves, driven by something they’ve never said out loud.

Most of the time, the thing driving them hardest is the thing they’ve shared the least.

That’s not a weakness. That’s just how it works sometimes.

You don’t have to share everything to use it. You don’t have to explain your reasons to honour them. And you don’t have to wait until you’re fully through something to let it fuel you.

But when the time comes, and the permission is there, telling the full story can be one of the most powerful things you ever do. For yourself, and for the people who needed to hear it and didn’t know it yet.

I don’t have much more to say about it today.

But I wanted to plant the seed early, because I think it will resonate with anyone who has ever drawn on darkness to do something meaningful. And with anyone who has carried part of their story privately while building something publicly.

The documentary is titled The Run Within, the same name as this blog. That’s not a coincidence. Both are about the same thing: what’s underneath. What drives people who keep going. What sits beneath the goals, the distances, and the decisions that don’t always make sense to those watching from the outside.

More on the documentary soon.

I appreciate you reading.
